Kayakers descend on Port Angeles for symposium

PORT ANGELES — Mike Kesl likes whitewater kayaking.

Kesl and almost 300 other kayaking enthusiasts enjoyed the sunny weekend weather at Hollywood Beach during the first Kayak Symposium on Saturday.

“This is fantastic,”‘ Kesl said of the weather and large turnout, which included kayakers ranging from beginners to experts.

“The interest is just unbelievable.”

Organizer David King, owner of Olympic Raft and Kayak, said he is pleased with the enthusiasm for the kayak clinic held inside the nearby Arthur J. Feiro Marine Life Center.

King said clear skies may have improved participation in the kayak gear swaps, demonstrations and clinics.

“That’s all kind of weather-related,” he said.
