A tiny, crawling denizen of the forest floor — the jumping slug — is delaying timber sales and trail development in Olympic National Forest.
Forest Service officials say the tiny slugs are not the next northern spotted owl.
But the slugs — about the size of the nail on a person’s little finger — have delayed some timber sales, including Big Shrew in the Quinault district of Olympic National Forest for more than two years, officials say.
The timber revenues lost because of the slugs during the last two years total more than $3.5 million, the Forest Service reported.
