JOYCE — A small sign is causing a big debate between residents and Crescent School District officials.
Officials want to replace the district’s existing reader board at the intersection of Joyce-Piedmont Road and state Highway 112 with an new electronic sign to improve communication with area residents.
However, the proposed electronic sign has not been universally embraced by some residents who say the money could be put to better use.
“It is my opinion that in a time of declining enrollment and declining academic achievement that there are more important areas to spend school money on,” resident and sign critic Parker Stoops said.
Crescent Superintendent Rich Wilson disagrees.
“I think the important issue is the new sign provides an opportunity to keep fresh up-to-date information in front of the public,” Wilson said.
Wilson has proposed installation of an electronic sign that would allow personnel to change messages by using a keypad in the office.
