JOHN NELSON’S LIVE MUSIC COLUMN: Kick up your heels as March roars in

WE’VE MADE IT to the end of the month, but next month promises to have more live music (after all, it has three more days) as more venues are open to bring in musicians to enhance their business and ambiance.

Also, we have St. Patrick’s Day in the middle of the month, as well as the first day of spring.

What other reason do you need to get out and enjoy the plethora of local and visiting musical talent?

Port Angeles

■ Today at Castaways Restaurant and Night Club, 1213 Marine Drive, there will be no country jam because High Country would like you all to attend Jimmy Hoffman’s Cancer Benefit at 7 Cedars Casino.(See Sequim entry.)

On Saturday, Chantilly Lace will have you dancing to Golden Oldies rock ’n’ roll to more contemporary rock ’n’ roll, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Two of the members have been playing together for more than 40 years.

■ Today, the Junction Roadhouse, 242701 U.S. Highway 101, multi-instrumentalist Ches Ferguson returns from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Saturday, prepare yourself for the Crazy Texas Gypsies, an award-winning band that has opened for ZZ Top, Curtis Salgado, the Ford Brothers and more. Dance to the blues from 8 p.m. to midnight. Cover.

■ On Friday, Les Wamboldt and Olde Tyme Country play at the Fairmount Restaurant, 1127 W. U.S. Highway 101, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

On Sunday, join the country jam from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, join in the fun with Dave and Rosalie Secord and the Luck of the Draw Band with special guest Vienna Barron, accompanied by Gary Prosser of Final Approach, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

■ Every Tuesday at the Port Angeles Senior Center, 328 E. Seventh St., the Port Angeles Senior Swingers present Wally’s Boys playing ballroom dance favorites from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. $5 cover; first-timers free.

■ On Friday and Saturday at Dupuis Restaurant, 256861 U.S. Highway 101, Bob and Dave play blues from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

■ On Sunday at Next Door Gastropub, 113 W. First St., Locos Only — with Taylor Ackley, Scott Bradley and Kevin Lee Magner — will play at 5 p.m.

Sequim and Blyn

■ On Friday at the Oasis Bar and Grill, 301 E. Washington St., the Discovery Bay Pirates come aboard from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

On Saturday, Awesome Bob performs from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, the Blue Hole Quintet jazzes things up from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

■ On Friday at Wind Rose Cellars, 143 W. Washington St., Bill Volmut performs during the First Friday Art Walk from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

■ On Friday at Pacific Mist Books, 121 W. Washington St., Howly Slim picks and grins from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. during the First Friday Art Walk.

■ It’s “All the Buzz” Wednesday at the Sequim Senior Activity Center, 921 E. Hammond St., with Victor hosting the open mic from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

■ Today in Club Seven lounge at 7 Cedars Casino, Blyn, the casino and Bedford’s Root Beer will sponsor the Jimmy Hoffman Band in a cancer-awareness fundraiser in memory of Cindy Hoffman at 6 p.m.

There will be lots of music, a raffle and a silent auction, with all proceeds donated to the Patient Navigator Fund at Olympic Medical Center.

On Friday, Top 40 dance band Expertease will have you dancing from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Port Hadlock

■ On Saturday at Ajax Cafe, 271 Water St., Mick and Barry perform from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

■ It’s rappers delight at The Cave Lounge at Zoog’s Caveman Cookin’ (formerly Hadlock House), 141 Chimacum Road, starting at 9 p.m. Saturday.

Performers include Endgame, KP Tha One, Nuvo and We ’R’ Us.

Cover is $5 at the door, with the show for ages 21 and older.

Port Townsend

■ Today at The Upstage, 923 Washington St., Kevin Mason and his band, with special guest Lesley Wake, perform a tribute to Ray Charles, BB King and Bobby “Blue” Bland at 7 p.m. $8 cover.

On Friday, the Crazy Texas Gypsies will perform classic swing, rockabilly and more at 8 p.m. $10 cover.

On Saturday, the Freddy Pink band returns where it began 25 years ago, playing rock and soul. Reservations recommended for the 7 p.m. program. $20 cover.

On Sunday, an open blues jam is at 6 p.m.

On Wednesday, Mollie O’Brien and Rich Moore perform American bluegrass, rhythm and blues, and funk at 7:30 p.m. $15 cover.

■ Every Monday, Trevor Hanson plays at Alchemy, 842 Washington St., from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

■ On Thursdays and Fridays, Steve Grandinetti plays and sings at the Northwest Maritime Center Cafe, 431 Water St., from noon till 2 p.m.

High notes

■ On Saturday, the Odd Hack Band comes to the Black Diamond Community Hall, 1942 Black Diamond Road, Port Angeles, for the contra dance called by Erran Sharpe.

Come at 7:30 p.m. for the 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. dance, and Erran will teach you the basics of contra dance. Requested donation is $7 for adults, $3 for kids (or bring goodies to share at break).

■ A celebration of Boiler Room culture and family will be held at The Boiler Room, 711 Water St., Port Townsend, with music from noon until closing.

Performances by Lifestyles of the Poor and Unknown, the Low Ones, Robin Kastles, A+bEe, Jet Sparks, Jabez Richard, Usana, the Solvents, Michael Thomas and Myles Carroll will highlight the day of face painting, games, raffles, coffee, cookies and free soup.
