JOHN NELSON’S LIVE MUSIC COLUMN: Keep voting . . . for live music on the Peninsula

THE TRICK-AND-TREAT season is behind us SEmD and so is Halloween SEmD so whether you backed a winner or a loser Tuesday, go out and listen to some live music, dance and celebrate the fact that we can make choices.

Port Angeles

• On Saturday, Junkyard Jane returns to the Junction Roadhouse, junction of U.S. Highway 101 and state Highway 112 five miles west of Port Angeles, their Peninsula home away from home, where they really cut loose with their roots-based, bluesy rock that will keep you on the dance floor from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. $5 cover.

Barry Burnett will be doing his Sunday Jam from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

On Wednesday, Jason and friends play roots music and more from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.

• Tonight at Castaways Restaurant and Night Club, 1213 Marine Drive, the Sun-downers host a jam from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. These fellas really know how to have fun!

On Friday and Saturday, Rough Cut will play all your favorite classic rhythm and blues, pop, country, bluegrass and Celtic tunes with some “stump the band” tunes thrown in from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Award-wining multi-instrumentalist Nolan Murray and acclaimed singer/songwriter Bruce Coughlan will show you a good time. • On Saturday, the SuperTrees rock ‘n’ roll band will be at the Bar N9ne, 229 W. First St., playing their high-energy mix of classics and genetically engineered originals at 9 p.m. $3 cover.

• On Friday, the inimitable and irrepressible Charlie Ferris returns to Wine on the Waterfront, 115 Railroad Ave., and celebrates the second anniversary of his Melodies and Memories Show, which provides “memory-invoking musical therapy for all ages” at 7 p.m. $3 cover.

• On Monday, Charlie Ferris takes his show to the east side of town to the Bushwhacker Restaurant, 1527 E. First St., from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. It’s a good thing Charlie’s Angels have wings so they can keep up with him!

• Every Tuesday evening at the Port Angeles Senior Center, Seventh and Peabody streets, the Port Angeles Senior Swingers presents Wally and the Boys playing ballroom dance favorites for the dancing pleasure of all seniors 45 years and older from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. $5 cover, first-timers free!

• On Wednesday at Dupuis Restaurant, 256861 U.S. Highway 101, Bob and Dave play blues with a brew and barbecue from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

• Tonight, Howly Slim performs vocal and guitar at Kokopelli’s Underground, 203 E. Front St., at 6 p.m. and again Sunday with George Radebaugh at 5 p.m.

• Dave and Rosalie Secord’s Luck of the Draw Band and performing guests, Ruby and Friends, will be playing a variety of music Wednesday at Smuggler’s Landing Restaurant and Lounge, 115 Railroad Ave., from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Come join the fun!

• Tonight and every Thursday, Larry and Rene Bauer direct the goings-on at the open mic hosted by the Cracked Bean, 108 DelGuzzi Drive, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Welcome to the live music mix.

• Victor Reventlow hosts the acoustic jam at the Fairmount Restaurant on U.S. Highway 101 west of Port Angeles from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. every Tuesday. Don’t be left out!

• On Friday night, the Veela Cafe, 133 E. First St., has Jim Lind providing both rock and country, fast and slow, from his impressive repertoire at 7:30 p.m.

Sequim and Blyn

• Tonight, don’t miss the jam hosted by Chantilly Lace at the Oasis Sports Bar and Grill, 301 E. Washington St., from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Any Thursday night, you’ll find some of the best jammers from your favorite bands joining in the fun. Classic rock and country from the ’50s and ’60s, blues and pop from later decades are all in the broad repertoire honed over 35 years. Jammers come in early and sign in on the sign-up sheet.

On Friday, enjoy the bluegrass and fiddle music of Skidder Hill from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

On Saturday, Thomas Sparks and Hannebu II entertain at 9 p.m. $2 cover.

On Monday, dance to the Cat’s Meow with Diane Beegle from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, enjoy the “boomer” music of Final Approach from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

• Damiana’s Best Cellars, 143 W. Washington St., hosts Kevin Lee Magner, Scott Bradley and Mary Pender and their genre-jumping acoustic tunes to celebrate Sequim’s First Friday Art Walk at 6 p.m.

• On Saturday, Howly Slim will be at Las Palomas Mexican Restaurant, 1085 E. Washington St., at 5 p.m.

• At The Buzz, 128 N. Sequim Ave., Kelly Thomas and Victor Reventlow host the very popular and rousing open mic Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

• On Friday at Club Seven Lounge at 7 Cedars Casino, Blyn, dance to local Turner Brothers Band from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

On Sunday, let it all hang out with the Fun Addicts from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Port Hadlock

• Today, Buzz Rogowski plays jazz and originals at the Ajax Cafe, 271 Water St., at 6 p.m.

On Sunday, Jim Nyby plays blues, ballads, jazz and soul at 5:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, Jess is styling on the piano at 6 p.m.

Port Townsend

• Today at the Upstage, 923 Washington St., revel in Kevin Burkes’ Open House at 8 p.m. Burkes is considered by many to be one of the great living Irish fiddlers, and his band of acclaimed musicians will put on a great show at 8 p.m. $20 cover.

On Friday, get your blues groove on with the Canadian band The Twisters, with a slew of Canadian blues awards, at 8 p.m. $12 cover.

On Saturday at noon, enjoy the New Age and healing music of Peter Kater. This much-acclaimed and Grammy-winning pianist-composer may not be familiar to you, but you’ve heard his music somewhere. $20

On Saturday at 8 p.m., the Grady Champion Band brings you “Mississippi Juke Joint,” “dirt” blues mixed with some smooth and soft grooves of pop and soul music. Whether with harmonica or his voice, he is sure to move you. $15 cover.

On Tuesday, the Tommy Castro Band, the 2010 B.B. King entertainer, band, contemporary blues artist and recording-of-the-year winner, comes to Port Townsend for an 8 p.m. show. If you only see one show this month, this is the one. Advance tickets $30 and $35.

• Pies on the Run, with Western swing, harmony yodeling and maybe a little rope twirlin’, rides into the Uptown Pub, 1016 Lawrence St., Friday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday, Port Angeles’ most energetic, roots-based, old-timey, groove-bustin’ band, Deadwood Revival, comes to the comfy confines of the pub. Get there early for the 9 p.m. show. $5 cover.

• On Friday at Sirens, 823 Water St., dance to the Pitfalls at 9 p.m. $5 cover.

On Saturday, Port Townsend blues and rock band Mongo Smash will keep you movin’ and groovin’ at 9 p.m. $5 cover.

• Tonight, the Boiler Room, 711 Water St., features Dylan Morrison and Skinny People Kissing for the open mic at 8 p.m. Sign up at 7 p.m.

• On Saturday at Castle Key, Seventh and Sheridan streets, Herb Payson and Todd Fisher play jazz from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. $5 cover.

• Jim Oliver, Joel Levy and Dirk Anderson entertain Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Undertown, Water and Taylor streets.

On Sunday, Howly Slim brings his original folk at 10 a.m.

• Every Friday at 5 p.m., you’ll find Howly Slim at the Banana Leaf Thai Restaurant, 609 Washington St.

Music news

• On Friday, multi-instrumentalist Carolyn Cruso brings her folk-, pop- and jazz-inspired acoustic music to the Laural B. Johnson Community Center, 923 Hazel Point Road, Quilcene, at 7:30 p.m. Cruso has traveled the world over, moving audiences with her expressive voice, flute, guitar and hammered dulcimer talents. $5 suggested cover.

State updates plan for Miller Peninsula

Sequim staff plan to send a proposal to the state this month to potentially fund sewer and water lift stations on West Sequim Bay Road using new developments’ property taxes through a Tax Increment Area by Sequim Bay in a 363-acre area.
