Jefferson County will prohibit new subdivisions on Marrowstone Island and limit families to pumping 1,000 gallons of water from wells each day.
The county commissioners forwarded those orders to their staff Monday in an effort to comply with a Western Washington Growth Management Hearing Board ruling that requires officials to address the problem of seawater intrusion in water wells.
The staff will now incorporate those recommendations into the Unified Development Code, which could come before the board next Monday.
If a public water system is not operating at Marrowstone by Dec. 31 2004, according to the recommendations, then the county will declare the island a seawater intrusion protection zone and could prohibit people from drilling new wells.
