The number of serious crimes in Jefferson County dropped last year by 7.7 percent, Sheriff Mike Brasfield told the Port Townsend Chamber of Commerce on Monday.
Brasfield reviewed the first six months of his term as sheriff at the chamber’s weekly luncheon meeting at Point Hudson’s Marina Room.
He cautioned that the crime statistics should be taken into context because Jefferson County doesn’t have many major crimes to begin with.
The county had 453 incidents of murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, theft, vehicle theft and arson last year.
“We went from 24 motor vehicle thefts in 2001 to 25 last year, skyrocketing 4 percent,” Brasfield quipped while putting a perspective on actual numbers versus percentages.
