PORT TOWNSEND — Every day is a celebration of life for cancer survivors.
On Friday and Saturday, city and county residents will join survivors in this celebration for the fourth annual Relay for Life of Jefferson County, a 24-hour fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.
The event runs from 6 p. m. Friday to 6 p.m. Saturday on the track at Blue Heron Middle School, 3939 San Juan Ave., in Port Townsend.
Cancer survivors will lead the first lap to begin the relay, and teams follow afterward.
Although it is a relay, there’s no finish line — until a cure for cancer is found, the overnight event’s organizers like to say.
Instead, various teams will participate and have at least one team member walking around the track — to symbolize the strength and determination it takes to battle cancer — until the event ends on Saturday.
All sorts of activities are planned to promote team competition, and trophies are awarded as well.
Teams are asked to try to raise $25 to $100 per member. They do it by securing pledges or holding fundraising events.
Relay teams will also be fundraising throughout the night, selling crafts and other items.
