Jefferson: Quilcene schools chief explains resignation

QUILCENE — The School District superintendent said Wednesday she wants to eliminate her own job and retire because to do otherwise would be financially and ethically irresponsible.

And while Judi Mackey admitted she may have felt unappreciated at times, she said those feelings are “not a factor” in her decision to retire.

“I would never dream of accepting a salary that would put teachers, students and classroom supplies in jeopardy,” Mackey said Wednesday.

The Quilcene School Board voted 4-1 Tuesday night to accept Mackey’s retirement.

Board members Shona Davis, Sharon Merrick, Craig Richbourg and Lorna Ward voted to accept the resignation. Member Viviann Kuehl opposed acceptance.

“You can’t just break a contract,” she said.

Mackey will officially retire July 1. Her contract was due to expire in 2004.

A 30-year veteran of the public school system, Mackey has worked as a principal and superintendent in Quilcene for the past four years.
