PORT TOWNSEND — Jefferson County residents are evenly split on whether they’d support increased taxes to raise money for clocktower repairs and other renovations at the courthouse.
The feelings about the courthouse repairs are part of a survey sent to all county postal customers in June. Of about 15,000 mailed, more than 1,500 were returned, county Commissioner Dan Titterness, R-Port Townsend, said.
Forty-two percent of the people that responded indicated they were in favor of a repair bond, the same number were against it and 16 percent said they were unsure.
Residents returning the surveys were less than happy with many services provided by the county.
The survey was sent out as part of a county newsletter to help commissioners get a feeling on the direction citizens want them to take the county.
As a whole, people said they were happy with the quality of life and level of personal safety and security the county provides. But there is room for improvement, Titterness said.
A large number of respondents, 85 percent, indicated they were happy with the parks and recreation program. Fewer, 27 percent, were satisfied with permit and building development services and youth programs, 24 percent.
