PORT LUDLOW — Leaders of the Hood Canal Coalition, which opposes the Fred Hill Materials pit-to-pier gravel-mining project, have applauded a preliminary decision from a state board on an appeal related to the project.
The Western Washington Growth Management Hearings Board recently ruled against arguments from Jefferson County and Fred Hill Materials, each of which sought to limit the scope of the appeal filed by the coalition and six other environmental groups.
The groups are appealing the county’s designation of 690 acres of Pope Resources timberland forest near Shine as “mineral resource lands.”
The company said the move would allow it to continue operations at its 144-acre sand-and-gravel pit in Shine, south of state Highway 104.
