Jefferson Historical Society plans volunteer fair in Port Townsend this Saturday

PORT TOWNSEND — The Jefferson County Historical Society will host a Volunteer Fair on Saturday.

The fair will be from noon to 3 p.m. in the Cotton Building, 607 Water St., Port Townsend.

People can drop in, enjoy refreshments, meet staff and board members, and learn about volunteering at the historical society.

“Whatever your talents, we can utilize them,” said Chris Prescott, historical society president.

“It’s a great way to have fun and preserve our history at the same time,” he added.

Bill Tennent, executive director, said that since it was founded, the historical society has grown to include five heritage sites and countywide programs serving nearly 40,000 people annually.

“Volunteers make it all happen, and we can always use more volunteers in every area,” Tennent said.

The fair is one of two events planned this month to mark the historical society’s 136th anniversary.

An open house is planned at the Research Center, 13692 Airport Cutoff Road, from noon to 3 p.m. April 26.

Visitors will get a chance to see the collections and operations up close.

The historical society also will offer the opportunity to Adopt an Artifact, in which participants get adoption certificates, have their photos taken with the object and get annual letters about its care.

Since it began in 1879, the historical society has celebrated April as Founders’ Month.

Volunteer opportunities include:

■ Serving as docents at the Rothschild House, Commanding Officer’s Quarters and Jefferson Museum of Art & History.

■ Guides on walking tours.

■ Collecting oral histories.

■ Assisting with events such as First Night, Epicurean Happenings and West End Weekend.

■ Working with summer history camps.

■ Helping plan and prepare exhibits.

■ Conserving and documenting collections.

■ Assisting visitors at The Gateway visitor center.

■ Helping with education committee programs, including First Friday Lectures and Teachers’ Trunks.

For more information, drop by the historical society at 540 Water St., see www.jchsmuseum.org or call 360-385-1003.

Nearly 150 people provided feedback about a new Hurricane Ridge Lodge project following the 2023 fire that destroyed the original structure. Nine easels were set up with questions and notes were provided for people to express their goals for a new lodge. The earliest construction can begin is in 2028, and it would take two to three years to complete, weather permitting. (Dave Logan/for Peninsula Daily News)
