JEFFERSON: Higher education center to offer teaching degrees

>

Graduating seniors won’t be the only ones entering college next fall if Matt Lyons can help it.

The Jefferson County Higher Education Center coordinator hopes to fill several college degree courses for teachers.

Lyons announced Monday that City University will offer a master’s degree in education beginning in October.

A bachelor of arts degree in education, with teacher certification and kindergarten through eighth grade endorsement, is set to begin in January.

“Right now, there’s no place on the Olympic Peninsula that I’m aware of to get a certificate to teach school,” Lyons said. “This would be the first program of that nature.”

The masters degree program will be for certified teachers in elementary, middle and high schools and will focus on technology, reading and communication, curriculum and other areas.
