PORT HADLOCK — Family wage jobs are the goal of every economic development group, but a Jefferson County agency is begging for applicants for positions paying more than $14 an hour.
“This is a living wage job,” said Jefferson County Sheriff Mike Brasfield, who has four open positions for guards at the county jail.
So far Brasfield has had trouble getting enough applicants to hold the testing required as part of the hiring process.
And that surprises the sheriff who is nearing the end of his first year in office.
“It comes with the fairly liberal pension and health benefits that are afforded to county employees,” Brasfield said.
At least five applicants are needed to hold testing in January for four positions at the jail in Port Hadlock.
So far, only four people have applied, he said Friday.
Ideally Brasfield said he’d like to have 12-15 candidates to choose from.
Though there is a constant concern about a lack of family wage jobs in the county, Brasfield said he’s practically had to go begging for applicants.
