Jefferson County Fair cites hero, celebrates record attendance

PORT TOWNSEND — Jimmy Leavitt has received the 2004 Jefferson County Fair Hero medal.

A volunteer at the annual summer fair for more than 15 years, he was in charge of the garbage detail — “and as you can well imagine with 17,500 people attending, there was a lot of garbage!”‘ said Sue McIntire, the fair’s treasurer.

“He is truly one of our heroes — without his help and constant smile the fair would not be the same. Jimmy has a smile and hello for everyone he sees.”

McIntire said this year’s Friday through Sunday fair, Aug. 13, 14 and 15, “was an overwhelming success. This year was a year for record setting — it broke the sought-after 17,000 mark that we have come close to in the past but never broken.

“This year’s attendance not only broke it but smashed it — with a total of 17,583 fairgoers this year.”

McIntire said exhibitors “were down from last year’s 486 to 462 this year, but the total entries were up to 3,537 from last year’s 3,448.
