Jefferson: County employees asked to voluntarily cut hours – — – or their jobs

Jefferson County administrators are asking county employees to voluntarily reduce their work hours as a means of bridging the county’s hefty budget shortfall.

More than 300 county employees were sent letters Monday asking them to voluntarily reduce their work hours or accept being voluntarily laid-off to help cover a $900,000 budget gap.

The move would supplement major belt-tightening measures and a freeze on vacant positions already in the works by the county to balance its $12.1 million general fund budget, County Administrator David Goldsmith said.

Goldsmith said a survey sent out to county employees several weeks ago indicated they favored a voluntary reduction in work hours over mandatory work-hour reductions, voluntary layoffs and forced layoffs.

Around 80 of the approximately 300 county employees responded to the survey, Goldsmith said.
