Jefferson County commissioners say they’ll decide the fate today of a highly debated application by Fred Hill Materials for a mineral resource land overlay zone at its Shine gravel pit.
The commissioners will convene at 10:30 a.m. in their meeting room in the basement of the courthouse, 1820 Jefferson St., Port Townsend.
None of the three commissioners — Glen Huntingford, Dan Titterness and Pat Rodgers — was willing Tiesdau to offer an early indication of how each might vote on the controversial issue Tuesday.
The three Republican commissioners held an hour-long executive session with a deputy prosecuting attorney to discuss legal issues.
Opponents of the overlay claim it is a first step toward Fred Hill Materials’ proposed “pit-to-pier” project that includes a four-mile conveyor from an expanded Shine pit to a new 1,100-foot pier on Hood Canal.
The county is under order from the Western Washington Growth Management Hearings Board to examine new environmental information on an amendment to the comprehensive plan approved in 2002.
