PORT TOWNSEND — Jefferson County Planning Commissioners have recommended establishment of two overlay boundaries, along with policies and development regulations, for Jefferson County International Airport.
The recommendation, along with one from the Department of Community Development staff, will be forwarded to county commissioners in November.
The commissioners will hold a public hearing, tentatively scheduled for Dec. 6.
“For the past 18 to 24 months, the county and Port of Port Townsend staffs have worked diligently to strike a balance between not infringing upon people’s property rights and the development of a process of notification that they’re in the vicinity of normal airport operations,” said Jim Pivarnik, Port of Port Townsend deputy director.
“Although it seems obvious, there are some people who might not know they’re in the flight pattern of the airport. We want to make sure they’re apprised of that.”
Two main goals are intended with the development of the overlay boundaries.
One overlay is based on the 55-decibel noise contour map; the second overlay is intended to let current and potential property owners know of their proximity to the airport and discourage incompatible uses.
