It could have been worse: Heavy snow fails to materialize, but flood watches up in Clallam, Jefferson

Officials from the National Weather Service say the big chill is over, but warming rain could present additional problems today.

The National Weather Service issued a flood watch for tonight through Saturday for rivers in Jefferson and Clallam counties as well as four other Western Washington counties: Lewis, Thurston, Grays Harbor and Mason.

Tuesday’s storm, which the weather service predicted to bring 3 to 6 inches of new snow, for the most part failed to materialize.

The North Peninsula’s most snowfall was seen in southern Jefferson County and western Clallam County.

Eight inches of snow was reported on the ground in Brinnon and about six inches fell in the Forks area.

Temperatures above freezing and rains will cause the snow and ice to turn into runoff in rivers and streams, the weather service warned.

“The freezing rain should end after midnight (Tuesday) and then warm up to rain through the morning hours,” said Jeff Rood, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Seattle.

“This should melt most of the snow.”
