In addition to marathon, you can watch jousting, hear fiddle tunes, eat homegrown strawberries

The second to last weekend of spring on the North Olympic Peninsula will feature a walk into yesteryear, a tribute to old-fashioned music and a taste of homegrown strawberries.

Residents and visitors can find a variety of events across the Peninsula.

They include:

* The first Port Angeles Renaissance Faire will feature jousting, a tea party and even a Renaissance Ball during its three-day run which starts today at 5:30 p.m.

Clallam County Fairgrounds are being taken back centuries for the faire, which continues Saturday and Sunday.

Tickets for the faire are $10 for adults, $8 for students, $5 for seniors and free for children younger than 5.

A full schedule, admissions to other events and details of the Renaissance Faire attractions appear on Page 3 of today’s Peninsula Spotlight, included with this edition.

* If old-fashioned fiddling is more your style, you’ll get an earful at Sequim Prairie Grange Hall, 290 Macleay Road in the Dungeness Valley.

That’s where dozens of instrumentalists will camp out for the three-day Old-Time Fiddlers event.

A free show begins the event tonight. For a schedule and additional details, see Page 6 of today’s PDN.

* The sweetness will definitely be on Marrowstone Island on Saturday for the annual Strawberry Festival at Fort Flagler State Park.

Sandcastle building begins at 9:30 a.m., just in time to take advantage of the low tide. Designs will be judged by Jefferson County Commissioner Glen Huntingford.

Families and small groups will bring their own picnic lunches for a group gathering at 11 a.m.

Then at noon, the annual Marrowstone Island photograph will be taken.

The highlight of the day follows: fresh strawberry shortcake, with local strawberries, homemade shortcakes and whipped cream, will be served to all attending.

Games will include three-legged race, water balloon toss, sack race and ending with the North vs. South tug of war.

All visitors to the Strawberry Fest will be given park passes that waive the daily parking fee at the state park.

In charge of activities are Bill Anliker, John Fitch, Bob Van Etten and Owen Mulkey. Further information is available by calling co-presidents Bill Anliker at 360-385-0558 or John Fitch at 360-379-9242.
