SEQUIM — Several hundred of the curious gathered in front of the new Home Depot in Sequim on Wednesday evening for what was billed as a community preview night.
The home improvement warehouse officially opens at 6 a.m. today.
A jazz band from Sequim High School led into the opening ceremonies by playing “My Favorite Things,” and Mayor Walt Schubert joined store manager Sam Schakromonov for a board-cutting ceremony and the presentation of a $2,000 check to the Olympic Peninsula Boys & Girls Club.
The new store contains about 140,000 square feet and offers products as varied as lumber, appliances and gardening supplies.
Schubert, however, jokingly wondered if there was enough space to satisfy the crowd outside.
“I think it’s pretty evident, looking at the parking lot, that it’s not big enough,” he said.
‘Feel free to shop’
After the ceremonial compliments were fulfilled — along with enough cheering to drown out a high school pep rally — employees removed the gate and let the crowd inside.
