Humane Society has volunteer positions outside of the shelter

PORT ANGELES — Volunteer opportunities abound at the Clallam County Humane Society, even for dog and cat lovers who haven’t the heart to work in the animal shelter at 2105 U.S. Highway 101.

Keely Pace, the society’s new volunteer coordinator, cites animal foster care, pet adoption fairs, grant writing and finance management as just a few such activities.

Some animal advocates avoid the shelter because unwanted dogs and cats sometimes must be destroyed there.

“We have so many different needs,” Pace said Monday, “writing grant applications and other things. I need to organize and place people according to their abilities to help.”

An example of an outside adoption was at Sunday’s grand opening of the Petco store in the Sequim Village Marketplace shopping center.

Volunteers helped new animal owners adopt four dogs and seven cats, she said.

The Humane Society will offer animals for adoption at Petco every other month, alternating with Peninsula Friends of Animals.

Clerical office

Besides the shelter west of Port Angeles, the society has an office in Armory Square, 228 W. First St., Port Angeles, for clerical activities.

“We definitely need more volunteers,” Pace said, in addition to the five new people who will help the agency with administrative tasks.

Interested people should e-mail her at volunteercoordinator@cchumane.com.
