The Hood Canal Bridge will be closed for three half-hour periods today.
The bridge will be closed from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 3 p.m. 3:30 p.m.
The closures will allow state Department of Transportation and Kiewit-General crews to clean and repair sections along the end of the west draw span pontoon to prepare to upgrade the connection point between the bridge’s east and west halves.
Aging timber currently acts as a cushion between the east and west draw spans, preventing concrete damage when the bridge closes, said Kevin Dayton, Transportation region administrator, in a written statement.
Today’s maintenance work will help prepare the west draw span for a rubber bumper that will match up with east draw span when it is installed in May-June 2009.
The bridge will be closed then to replace the eastern half.
It is now 82 percent complete, Dayton said.
