Highway lane blocked after small fire breaks out

IRONDALE — A small fire along state Highway 19 in Irondale led to the shutting down of one lane for about an hour and a half while crews worked to contain the blaze.

According to East Jefferson Fire-Rescue Public Information Officer Bill Beezley, crews were called out to the 6800 block of Beaver Valley Road just before 11:40 p.m. Tuesday.

Beezley said the occupants of the property said they had been shooting off small fireworks and one might have accidentally shot into a window of a second-story storage area, lighting hay on fire.

The building, which was a fairly large metal structure, sustained modest damage, according to Beezley. The damage was contained almost entirely to the second story, which was being used as a storage space.

No one was injured or displaced. However crews did have to shut down one lane of Highway 19 temporarily. According to Beezley, the structure was only about 100 feet from the road and so crews needed to park in the street to have enough space to deal with the blaze.

Crews shut down the road at about 12:16 a.m., according to the state Department of Transportation. It was reopened at about 1:45 a.m. Wednesday.

Crews were originally told they were responding to a barn fire, but Beezley said the structure was more of a storage facility and was mostly metal rather than wood.
