High surf expected along the North Olympic Peninsula’s Pacific coast

When it turns dark tonight, the surf along the North Olympic Peninsula’s coast will turn treacherous.

And it will stay so into Thursday.

Here’s the National Weather Service advisory:

241 PM PST WED DEC 16 2009

A HIGH SURF ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM THIS EVENING TO

6 AM PST THURSDAY.

POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS HIGH SURF CONDITIONS WILL DEVELOP ALONG THE

NORTH AND CENTRAL WASHINGTON COAST THIS EVENING AND CONTINUE

TONIGHT…AS WESTERLY SWELLS BUILD TO AROUND 20 FEET.

WAVES WILL GRADUALLY SUBSIDE THURSDAY TO AROUND 16 FEET IN THE

AFTERNOON.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

IT IS DANGEROUS TO FISH OR OBSERVE WAVES FROM ROCKS DURING HIGH

SURF CONDITIONS…AS LARGE WAVES CAN SUDDENLY ENGULF THE AREA.

UNWARY BEACH WALKERS CAN ALSO BE CAUGHT BY WAVES RACING FARTHER

UP THE BEACH THAN USUAL…AND DEBRIS SUCH AS LOGS BEING TOSSED

ABOUT IN THE WAVES CAN CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY. RIP CURRENTS AND

BEACH EROSION ARE ALSO POSSIBLE.
