Here we blow again: North Olympic Peninsula buffeted

Several trees were blown down in Clallam and Jefferson counties and power was knocked out to many areas after gusty winds returned to the region Tuesday.

A tree measuring about two feet across fell onto power lines on Cape George Road near the intersection of Dennis Boulevard near Port Townsend at about 4:15 p.m., blocking both lanes of the road.

Electricity was knocked out to a portion of homes in the Cape George area.

A lineman from Puget Sound Energy arrived at about 4:30 p.m., but an update was unavailable Tuesday evening.

Cape George Road was reopened about 6:30 p.m., said Jenson Evans, Cape George Fire Department emergency medical technician.

At about 6 p.m. trees and downed power lines closed State Highway 116 for one mile in both directions at Blue Heron Road about 1½ miles east of Fort Flagler State Park. The road was reopened by 11 p.m.

Puget Sound Energy spokesman Roger Thompson said the utility experienced a few outages in East Jefferson County but relatively minor damage.

Clallam County Public Utility District began listing power outage areas on its Web site shortly before 3 p.m. Tuesday.

As of 7:30 p.m., outages had been reported in the Mariposa, Lostwood Lane and Kirner Road areas of Sequim.

In the Port Angeles area, reported outage areas were Cedar Park Drive, Island View Road, Masters Road, Greentree Road, Quail Run Road.

On the West End, power outages were reported in the Hok-Ozette Road and Nicholas Road areas.

No roads in the area were closed on Tuesday, according to Neah Bay Public Safety.

Olympic National Park spokeswoman Barb Maynes said that by 5 p.m. Tuesday, road crews had cleared the weekend’s avalanche off Hurricane Ridge Road to within three miles of Hurricane Ridge.

Crews plan to resume plowing on Thursday.

Conditions were extremely icy, she said.

Gusts were reported as high as 60 mph in the northwestern part of the state during the quickly moving windstorm.
