Hay in truck catches fire on Highway 104

PORT LUDLOW — A truck carrying hay caught fire and shut down state Highway 104 near Sandy Shore Road for about a half-hour Monday evening.

The truck was traveling west on Highway 104 when the 10 bales of hay in the back caught fire just before 6:30 p.m., according to Keppie Keplinger, public information officer for Port Ludlow Fire and Rescue.

No injuries were reported. The smoke halted traffic on Highway 104 in both directions.

A truck carrying a fire extinguisher happened to be in the area and the driver stopped to help put out the fire.

“The driver of the delivery truck began handing fire extinguishers out to others who had stopped to help,” said Port Ludlow Fire Chief Brad Martin in a news release.

“That was a huge help as the wind had picked up and the bystanders kept the fire from extending into the dry grass along the highway, which could have made the situation significantly worse.”

The cause of the fire was undetermined Tuesday.

Also assisting at the fire were East Jefferson Fire-Rescue, Quilcene Fire and Rescue, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the State Patrol.
