Group planning to count homeless people in Jefferson County

PORT TOWNSEND — Continuum of Care, an group charged with creating a plan to stem homelessness in Jefferson County, seeks community help with its second annual census and wants ideas on shelter construction.

Volunteers are asked to attend a Point in Time head count training and planning meeting at 7 p.m. next Wednesday at the Tri-Area Community Center, 10 West Valley Road, Chimacum.

The census to determine how many homeless people live in Jefferson County is scheduled for Jan. 26.

The group is also planning a shelter development meeting in February. The meeting time and location are yet to be scheduled.

“We are looking forward to planning a community meeting where people can come and talk about how they feel about a shelter building in their area,” said Sylvia Arthur, Continuum of Care coordinator.

“The idea is, if you are going to build something someplace, the people have the right for input on what they think about that.”

Temporary tent city

The group also is working with the Port Townsend Affordable Housing Committee to develop a plan to create a temporary emergency camping site.

The group is trying to choose between Chimacum Park near the Tri-Area Community Center and the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, both of which could be set up as temporary sites for the homeless, proponents say.
