PORT ANGELES — The city is teaming up with the Port Angeles Lefties to make Civic Field a more environmentally friendly ballpark.
The city, which rents Civic Field to the summer collegiate baseball team, will provide $3,000 worth of biodegradable plates and bowls for concession items to be sold at the Lefties’ remaining home games.
The palm leaf and sugar cane plates and bowls are sturdy, sustainable, free of toxic ingredients and take about 45 to 60 days to decompose, said Chig Martin, Lefties director of Fun/Sales.
Martin said the biodegradable plates are a “great alternative to plastic and Styrofoam dinnerware.”
“Along with biodegradable products, reusable cups will also be available,” Martin said.
Those who purchase souvenir Lefties cups and return them to another game in 2019 will be eligible for a discount on concession stand beverages.
The pilot project to make Civic Field more environmentally friendly is a joint effort between the Lefties and the Port Angeles Parks and Recreation and Public Works departments.
“We hope that this is just a start,” Parks and Recreation Director Corey Delikat said.
“We would be interested in expanding this program in the upcoming years with hopes that other entities would like to partner and continue to help grow the program.”
Delikat added: “Hopefully this program will not only expand over time but will also catch on to the other stadiums within the West Coast League.”
The wood-bat West Coast League features top college prospects from around the country.
The third-year Lefties signed a contract extension with the city of Port Angeles this year to play at Civic Field through at least 2024.
The Lefties host the Portland Pickles at 6:35 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 1:35 p.m. Sunday.
