PORT ANGELES — State, federal and tribal officials will not sign an agreement Monday as planned to restart construction at the graving yard.
“The signing has been delayed by at least a day,” Lower Elwha Klallam Tribal Chairman Dennis R. “Sully” Sullivan said.
“One of the attachments to the agreement was not ready in time for lawyers to review it.”
In addition, more Native American remains were found on the 22-acre site last week
The latest discovery occurred March 8 when workers installing a drainage system found the skeletal remains of an adult on the property that was home to a 19th century Klallam village.
The remains were removed from soils by the evening of March 11, placed in cedar boxes and moved to a secure, undisclosed location, said Frances G. Charles, Lower Elwha Klallam secretary/treasurer.
Charles said the remains were not found in or near “the area of archaeological interest” identified during an archaeological survey last fall.
