PORT ANGELES — A coalition that includes church, educational and youth charities will fire a $248,000 volley in the battle against poverty at Mount Angeles View Family Apartments.
The specific target will be poor people whose children — for lack of social and occupational skills — grow up to become more poor people. The ammunition will come from a three-year grant by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Beneficiaries of the services are the residents of the rent-subsidized apartments in Port Angeles.
Melinda Szatlocky, special programs manager for the Housing Authority of the County of Clallam, presented county commissioners with news of the grant at their meeting Tuesday.
Partners in the program include the housing authority, Lutheran Community Services’ Parent Line, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula, Camp Fire USA Juan de Fuca Council, and the Family Literacy Program of Peninsula College.
“The collaborators for this grant believe that factors contributing to lives of poverty are multiple and complex,” Szatlocky said.
“Therefore, the program was designed to involve parents and children in activities designed to increase their understanding of resources and opportunities in their communities.”
