PORT ANGELES — Olympic Medical Center recently received a $6,390 grant from the Benjamin N. Phillips Memorial Fund to buy six Medela Symphony breast pumps.
Olympic Medical’s New Family Services staff offers a breast pump lending program to new mothers in Clallam County.
“Our nurse lactation consultants are grateful for the generosity of the Benjamin N. Phillips Memorial Fund for supporting the needs of new families,” said Chris Johnson, director of obstetrics and new family services.
OMC’s lactation nurses provide health care, education and breastfeeding support to all families who deliver at Olympic Medical Center and those referred from other hospitals.
Some new moms struggle to breastfeed and may not have access to a quality breast pump, OMC representatives said. Loaning these breast pumps helps mothers provide for their babies with the healthiest food available.
Breast pumps are loaned out on a medical-need basis.
The Benjamin N. Phillips Memorial Fund grants annually to charitable organizations serving Clallam County and was created by Benjamin N. Phillips, a prominent banker and community leader in Port Angeles in the early 1900s.
