Gateway center project bid opening today

PORT ANGELES – The bids for the Port Angeles International Gateway Transportation Center will be opened today.

The bids for the $13.8 million project, which has been out to bid since Aug. 28, will be opened at 4:05 p.m. in the conference room at Clallam Transit System headquarters, 830 W. Lauridsen Boulevard in Port Angeles.

The project to provide a more attractive entrance to the city’s downtown is slated for an area roughly bounded by Front Street and Railroad Avenue at Lincoln Street.

The project – a partnership of the city and Clallam Transit, with the Port Angeles Downtown Association participating during the earlier design phase – will include a transit building, bus staging area and public plaza.

City Public Works Director Glenn Cutler said the Port Angeles City Council will recommend a bid award, but the bid will be awarded by Clallam Transit System’s Board of Directors.

City Traffic Engineer Jim Mahlum said he didn’t know yet when the bid would be awarded.

“It depends on how bids come in. We have to work together with Clallam Transit,” he said.

“I would actually say we could see the workers in the hard hats by the end of March or first of April.

That’s a fast track, if everything is approved right away,” Mahlum said.
