Washington State University Clallam County Extension seeks gardens to glean.
According to a press release, gleaning is the process of harvesting extra fruits and vegetables left in fields after the marketable harvest is complete.
In 2018, the extension’s gleaning program harvested more than 10,000 pounds of produce that, otherwise, would have been wasted.
When a county resident arranges for gleaning volunteers to pick extra produce, at least half of what they pick will be donated to food banks, senior centers and after-school programs.
Homeowners with extra figs, peaches, apricots, walnuts, hazelnuts, grapes, vegetables or Italian prune plums in their gardens are especially encouraged to donate because of the demand for these items, but any produce is welcome.
For more information or to arrange for a gleaner to visit, contact Sharah Truett at 360-565-2619 or email struett@co.clallam.wa.us.
