Fundraiser for Japan in Port Angeles; cards can be signed for Mutsu City

PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula International Relations Association will continue a fundraiser today for Japanese earthquake and tsunami relief.

A group of representatives of PIRA will be at Safeway, 110 E. Third St., throughout the day to accept monetary donations for the American Red Cross. The fundraising effort began Saturday.

The donations will be designated for tsunami and earthquake relief for Japan.

In addition to accepting funds, the group will have cards to wish well Mutsu City, Port Angeles’ sister city.

Residents can sign the cards before they are sent to Japan.

In Mutsu City, the quake knocked out power for a day and caused a “dwarf tsunami,” but no residents of the city were injured, said Satoshi Tomioka, co-founder of the sister city relationship, in an email to PIRA President Tad Price.
