PORT TOWNSEND — A Port Townsend family has established a fund to help families in Jefferson County which have children with serious illnesses — and use Children’s Hospital in Seattle — pay for medical expenses.
The Dr. and Mrs. H. Kennith Carter Fund has been set up through the Jefferson County Community Foundation, a nonprofit philanthropic organization with the longterm goal of building permanent funds for the charitable benefit of county residents.
“There are a lot of families in Jefferson County who have sick children and can’t pay their bills,” said Mrs. Carter of the reason she started the fund.
“This is the first fund of this type,” said foundation President Bruce McComas.
“We are extremely pleased that the Carter family has chosen this way to express its commitment to families who need help covering their children’s medical expenses.
“This is a perfect example of how the foundation can assist both donors and the community.”
Contributions noted
Dr. Carter, who died last year, was known for his many contributions of both time and money to the community, said Kristina Mayer of KLMayer Consulting Group, which has helped to guide the foundation since 2004.
Named Citizen of the Year on two occasions, Dr. Carter was a member of both the Kiwanis Club and Port Townsend Elks Lodge for more than 50 years.
