A sailboat race to benefit Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County, a quilt show with everything from demonstrations to massages and a special Tails to Trails dog walk are among the special events scheduled on the North Olympic Peninsula this weekend.

China travel talk

Bob and Claire Rogers will present “In Search of Shangri-La,” a multimedia presentation of their exploration of southwest China on a tandem bicycle, in Sequim tonight, Port Townsend on Saturday and Port Angeles on Sunday.

All three will be at 7 p.m. Admission will be $5, with children admitted free.

Tonight’s Sequim program will be at the Sequim High School cafeteria, 601 N. Sequim Ave.

The Port Townsend show will be at the Broken Spoke bicycle shop, 835 Water St.

The Port Angeles show will be at the Port Angeles Senior Center, 328 E. Seventh St.

The Peninsula Trails Coalition Adventure Traveler Slide Show events are fundraisers for the Olympic Discovery Trail.

Proceeds will go toward the purchase of tools, equipment and lunches for volunteers.

Ring the bells

PORT ANGELES — The Michael Trebert chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, together with other chapters throughout the United States, wants local churches, government facilities and residents to participate in “Bells Across America” by ringing bells large and small at 1 p.m. today.

The event will mark the 223rd anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787.

Among the participants are St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Sequim; St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church and Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Port Angeles; the Gateway Transportation Center in Port Angeles; and the Clallam County Courthouse.

Benefit concert

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Symphony Orchestra will host an evening with the community’s top young musicians on Saturday.

The dinner benefiting the orchestra will be at 6 p.m. at C’est si Bon restaurant, 23 Cedar Park Drive, just east of Port Angeles.

“Concert and Cuisine” will feature violinist Erin Hennessey, oboist Johanna Jacobsen and violinist Levi Yearian, all of whom were recognized this year in the symphony’s Young Artists Competition.

While the music plays, guests will enjoy a four-course dinner with wine.

Daddy Daughter Dance

PORT ANGELES — The city of Port Angeles’ Recreation Department will hold its annual Daddy Daughter Dance at the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St., from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.

Dads, uncles, grandpas can take their special young ladies out for an evening of music, refreshments and fun.

Cost is $15 per couple and $5 for each additional child.

Harvest breakfast set

PORT ANGELES — Irwin Dental Center, 620 E. Eighth St., will hold its third annual Harvest Breakfast fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Menu items are buttermilk pancakes, cheesy eggs, sausage, Yukon Gold hash browns, fruit, orange juice, coffee and hot cocoa.

Cost is $7 plus a donation of a canned food item.

PORT ANGELES — A car wash and bake sale in memory of Ken “Badger” Hyatt will be held at A & B Auto, 1403 E. First St., at 9 a.m. Saturday.

An avid motorcyclist, Hyatt was killed in a collision Aug. 28 at the junction of U.S. Highway 101 and state Highway 112.

Hyatt’s friends and family are seeking donations to cover the cost of a sign warning drivers to “Please Keep an Extra Eye Out for Motorcyclists.”

Mount Baldy hike

PORT ANGELES — The North Olympic Group of the Sierra Club will hike up Mount Baldy on Saturday.

The hike is free and open to the public.

This is a strenuous hike with elevation increasing about 3,500 feet over 2.5 miles.

Auditions continue

PORT ANGELES — Teenagers and adults alike can audition for “Meet Me in St. Louis,” the Port Angeles Community Players’ fall production.

Tryouts began Thursday and continue 7 p.m. today at the Port Angeles Community Playhouse, 1235 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

The show — the nonmusical version of Sally Benson’s classic — has parts for seven men, nine women, six teen girls and three teen boys.

The play’s performance dates are Nov. 19 through Dec. 5.

Garden workshop

PORT ANGELES — A workshop on “Digging, Dividing and Storing Dahlia Tubers” will be held at Jan’s Country Garden, 344 O’Brien Road, on Saturday.

Jan Jones, owner-operator of the garden, will focus on caring for dahlias throughout the fall, winter and spring months.

Two workshops will be conducted. The first session is at 11 a.m.; the second session is at 1 p.m.

They are limited to 10 participants per session.

Amateur radio license

PORT ANGELES — The Clallam Country Amateur Radio Club will hold a technician and general license instruction class starting Saturday.

It will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Port Angeles Fire Department, 102 E. Fifth St.

Another class will be conducted the following Saturday, Sept. 25, at the same place, also from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A class review is planned from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2. The final exam will be at 1 p.m. Oct. 2.

Class material will come from the American Radio Relay League Technician or General Class manuals.

The class is free, not including course materials and a $15 processing fee for the exam.

Hospice benefit

SEQUIM — Captains and crew from the Sequim Bay and Port Angeles yacht clubs will race sailboats in the 18th Reach for Hospice, a benefit for Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County on Saturday.

Three races are planned. They will begin at 12:30 p.m.

The public is encouraged to watch the race from a variety of areas in the marina complex.

An awards’ ceremony will be between 4:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.

SEQUIM — The Sequim City Band wraps its outdoor concert season at the James Center for the Performing Arts at Carrie Blake Park, 202 N. Blake Ave., at 3 p.m. Sunday.

The concert will feature “Hoagy Carmichael in Concert”; “Red’s White and Blue March,” composed by Red Skelton; and “Show Boat, Selection for Concert Band.”

SEQUIM — An orthopedic screening clinic for children from birth to age 18 will be held at the Sequim Masonic Lodge, 700 S. Fourth Ave., from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.

The clinic is sponsored by the Olympic Peninsula Shrine Club.

Children with a treatable condition will be referred to the Shriners Hospitals for Children in Portland, Ore.

Medical care at Shriners Hospitals for Children is provided without financial obligation to patients or their families.

The hospitals can treat orthopedic conditions such as scoliosis, neuromuscular disorders, hand and back problems, limb length discrepancy, congenital hip problems and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

SEQUIM — Olympic Theatre Arts will conduct auditions for “The Thwarting of Baron Bolligrew” at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The action comedy has special effects and includes knights, a villain, a magician and a dragon.

SEQUIM — The seventh annual Fun Walk to benefit the Dungeness Valley Health and Wellness Clinic is Saturday.

Closing ceremonies will be at 11 .am.

JOYCE — A Motorcycle Poker Run to benefit the Crescent School scholarship fund is set for noon Saturday.

The cost is $20 for riders and $10 for passengers. The cost includes a barbecue at the Family Kitchen at 2:30 p.m.

Israeli talk Sunday

PORT TOWNSEND — The deputy consul general of Israel for the Pacific Northwest region will speak about Israel on Sunday.

Gideon Lustig of the Israeli consulate in San Francisco will speak at 4:30 p.m. at Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 2333 San Juan Ave., Port Townsend.

His address will be two days before the Port Townsend Food Co-op board is expected to decide on a proposed boycott of seven Israeli-made products.

The co-op is scheduled to address the proposal at a meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday. That meeting also will be at the Quimper Unitarian Universalist Church.

Members will vote on the proposal, in which the co-op would boycott products from Israel and the occupied territories “until Israel stops violating international law and the rights of the Palestinian people.”

Gaza talk Sunday

PORT TOWNSEND — Kit Kittredge of Quilcene will discuss her five tours of the Gaza Strip on Sunday.

Kittredge, a leader in urging a boycott of Israeli goods at the Port Townsend Food Co-op, will speak at 2 p.m. at the Port Townsend Masonic Lodge, 1338 Jefferson St.

Kittredge supports the Palestinian Civil Society’s call to boycott, divest and sanction Israeli products until what she calls “Israeli apartheid” ends.

Quilt show set

PORT TOWNSEND — More than 100 quilts will be displayed during the Cabin Fever Quilters 30th show at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds today and Saturday.

The quilts will be on display at the fairgrounds at 4907 Landes St., from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Admission will be $4.

A country store, food and free neck and shoulder massages by therapists from Kingston Crossing Wellness Center also are planned, as well as demonstrations of hand and machine quilting, piecing and sewing machine maintenance.

Vendor with fabrics, books, patterns and machines from shops in Port Townsend, Sequim, Port Angeles and Port Gamble will sell their goods.

One booth is dedicated solely to threads and another to hand-dyed fabrics.

The featured quilter, Charlie Petersen, makes custom quilts, “rescues” vintage quilts and designs and publishes quilt patterns.

Tickets, which are $1 each, will be available for the 2010 raffle quilt.

Soviet fighter on display

PORT TOWNSEND — A classic Soviet-era fighter plane is on display now at the Port Townsend Aero Museum through Sunday.

The Yakovlev Yak 11 was the first plane to be shot down by U.S. forces in the Korean War in 1050.

The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day except Monday and Tuesday.

Admission to the museum is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and active military, $6 for children from 7 to 12 and free for children 6 and younger.
