Friends of Animals tames ex-alley cat

Alexandra, “a beautiful little Russian blue kitty,” is one of the animals that Catherine Burke rescued and took to Peninsula Friends of Animals, the no-kill shelter east of Port Angeles.

Nancy Campbell, a Friends spokeswoman, described Alexandra as “very shy when she came to us, but she’s turning into a cat who would be a wonderful addition to someone’s home.”

Alexandra has been at the Friends shelter for about half a year.

“She’s really made a turnaround,” Campbell said. “She’s learning to trust people.”

Like all animals the Friends of Animals admits to its shelter, Alexandra was thoroughly examined by a veterinarian, spayed, given her shots and placed in quarantine for two weeks to make certain she harbored no diseases or parasites.

Each animal also receives an imbedded identifying microchip.

The Friends charge $75 to adopt a cat, which Campbell calls a bargain because the shelter spends from $150 to $250 on each animal for veterinary services or care.
