FRESHWATER BAY — This whale of a tale may have a happy ending.
The 20-ton sei whale carcass that has plagued Place Road residents with its stench all week was towed from the beach Saturday afternoon behind a fishing boat, headed west.
“What a relief,” said Dennis Lee, who lives on Place Road west of Port Angeles and spent much of the week, along with other neighbors, trying to get the whale removed. “I was really glad to see it disappear around the point.”
Lee and about 20 others stood along the rocky beach Saturday and watched as a high tide pushed gently at the whale with each wave.
In the bay, the fishing boat Northern Legacy pulled a line taut from its stern to the whale’s tail, tugging on the 40-foot mammal and pulling it slowly into the surf.
