FRESHWATER BAY — As a dead 45-foot whale lies on the cobbled shores of a beach off Place Road, residents worry about the days to come.
The whale, which Cascadia Research scientists think is an endangered sei whale, washed ashore Sunday and will likely stay in its current location until more is known about who owns the beach.
“It already has a bit of an odor to it, and it is just going to get worse,” said Lyndee Lapin, who owns a home and property above where the whale washed up.
“We really don’t know what to do or who to call.”
Lapin said her property extends to the high tide line, and thought the beach was in county or state jurisdiction.
“We have no idea who is in charge of disposal or how they would get the whale out of here,” said her husband, Allen Lapin.
“It looks like a 747 hit — look at the size of that thing.”
