Free TAX-AIDE service starts Friday

Although the process is a little different this year, IRS-certified AARP TAX-AIDE volunteers will be available to help residents prepare and electronically file tax returns at several sites in Clallam and Jefferson counties.

TAX-AIDE volunteers will be available today and throughout the tax season, which extends through April 15.

Assistance will be by appointment only. Call the following locations.

Port Townsend Community Center: 620 Tyler St., 360-302-1867.

Forks Assembly Of God parking lot: 81 Huckleberry Lane, 360-452-6541.

The TAX-AIDE program, provided free of charge, is sponsored by the IRS and the AARP Foundation, and is available for low- and middle-income taxpayers of all ages.

Program volunteers are IRS-certified to prepare most basic tax returns, making sure that the taxpayer receives all eligible deductions and credits. They do not prepare returns for taxpayers who have income from rental properties or for taxpayers with complicated business returns.

The process

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, TAX-AIDE volunteers will prepare returns remotely, looking to ensure the health and safety of volunteers and taxpayers.

TAX-AIDE users must make an appointment; no walk-in services will be provided.

Once users have made appointments, they will be instructed on where to go to pick up a packet containing instructions on how to proceed further.

In that packet will be instructions along with the following two forms that must be completed and signed before arrival at the appointment site:

• Form 13614-C — Intake/Interview Quality Review Form.

• Form 14446 — Virtual VITA/TCE Taxpayer Consent.

Once at the appointment site, TAX-AIDE users are asked to stay in their vehicle at the specified location where a volunteer meets them in the parking lot to take information and tax documents.

The information is then scanned and documents will be returned to users at that point.

Returns are then com pleted and will be available to be picked up at the same location one week later.
