Former Sequim planner brought back for special projects

SEQUIM –– Former planner Joe Irvin has been hired back on an interim basis to help guide the city through special planning projects.

City Manager Steve Burkett announced the hire Tuesday.

“Although Joe brings much technical strength to this position from his city work experience, some of his greatest strengths are his strong commitment, interpersonal skills, and his knowledge of the Sequim community and organizational values,” Burkett said.

Irivin worked as the city’s senior planner from 2005 to 2011, serving as interim planning director after the 2010 resignation of Dennis Lefevre.

He left Sequim in April 2011 to take a post as the zoning administrator and interim community affairs director in Marco Island, Fla.

He begins with Sequim on March 31 under a temporary contract through the end of the year.

He will help prepare a master plan for the city’s parks, along with updating a parks and recreation phase of the city’s comprehensive plan rewrite.

Irvin also will coordinate special seasonal events and help with management of construction of the new civic center. He will also aid in development of the city’s capital improvement plan.

His position will be funded with savings from the retirement of parks manager Jeff Edwards and money budgeted for the park plan.

Irvin will be paid a prorated portion of the annual salary for the position, which ranges from $57,960 to $76,500.

Burkett said the city may make the position permanent as it prepares a budget for 2015.
