FORKS — A high school history and mathematics teacher here is one of eight honored statewide for “effective” instructional abilities.
Val “V.J.” Giles, who has taught at Forks High School for about 20 years, received an inaugural Robert J. Handy Effective Teacher Award from the Public Employees Mutual Casualty Co. Insurance Foundation and the Washington State School Retirees’ Association.
“I am humbled and honored to be here today,” Giles said at an awards ceremony Tuesday in Port Angeles. “I am humbled and honored that my peers would do this for me. It is quite an honor.”
Giles, nominated by Forks High School Principal Don Young, competed against teachers from Pierce, Mason, Clallam, Jefferson and Kitsap counties for the $1,250 award.
