Flue fire damages Sequim-area home

SEQUIM — A fire that originated from the flue pipe of a wood-burning stove spread into a home and caused about $60,000 worth of damage to a Sequim home last week, Clallam County Fire District 3 officials said.

The home was occupied at the time of the fire by an elderly couple who tried to use a fire extinguisher to extinguish the fire; no one was injured, fire district officials said.

Assistant chief Dan Orr said Clallam County Fire District 3 personnel responded to the fire at 382 W. Silberhorn Road at 6:48 p.m. on Dec. 16. Firefighters attacked the fire via the front door, and crew members were sent to the roof to cut a ventilation hole.

The structural loss was estimated at $50,000, while the loss of contents estimated at $10,000, Orr said.

Clallam County PUD, Olympic Ambulance and Clallam County Sheriff’s deputies assisted at the scene.

District officials remind residents to clean their stoves and flue pipes.
