PORT TOWNSEND – Guests spending the night at the new emergency shelter for the homeless got a rude awakening Sunday morning.
“When the doors were opened at 6 a.m., the water came in,” said deForrest Walker, intake coordinator for the shelter, which is located in the basement of the American Legion hall on Monroe Street.
On Saturday night, she screened 10 guests who were served a hot meal before they bedded down for the night on foam mats on the floor.
On Sunday morning, the men were still asleep when shelter volunteers opened the door to the parking lot and found that it had flooded from downpours overnight.
Standing water poured down the sloped entry ramp, Walker said.
“It had also seeped into the back rooms,” she said.
