First weekend of fall offers all kinds of events

A large harvest of events on the North Olympic Peninsula offer opportunities to eat well, ride well, shop freely or help worthy causes this weekend.

Here are a few of the other activities offered this weekend.

100-Mile Harvest

SEQUIM — The Friends of the Fields fundraising 100-Mile Harvest Dinner is Sunday.

The annual fundraiser for Friends of the Fields, a farmland preservation coalition, will be at 5:30 p.m. at the Guy Cole Convention Center in Sequim’s Carrie Blake Park, 202 N. Blake Ave.

Ingredients for the dinner come from within a 100-mile radius.

Tickets are $100 per person and available at www.FriendsoftheFields.org or by phoning 360-683-8636.

Proceeds benefit Friends of the Fields’ farmland preservation efforts, and $75 of the ticket price is tax-deductible.

Fall plant sale

PORT ANGELES — The Master Gardeners Foundation of the Olympic Peninsula Fall Plant Sale will be Saturday and Sunday.

The sale of bulbs, native plants, trees, shrubs, grasses and ground covers will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday and from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday at the Master Gardener demonstration garden at 2711 Woodcock in Sequim.

Prices will be cut in half Sunday.

The Master Gardeners will sponsor a drawing for a wheelbarrow of gardening supplies in conjunction with the sale on Saturday.

Plowing party

SEQUIM — Community members are invited to join a “plowing party” at the Clark Farm, 322 Clark Road, off Lotzgesell Road north of Sequim, on Saturday.

Starting at 9 a.m., local farmers on antiquated — but well-preserved — tractors will plow 15 acres in preparation for a fall planting of barley.

The “party,” said organizer Holly Clark, should last until late afternoon.

She invites guests to bring lawn chair, and said food concessions will be on site.

Monster trucks

PORT ANGELES — Trucks with such names as “High Anxiety,” “Disturbed,” “Trouble Maker,” “Monster Patrol” and the Monster Ride Truck “Nasty Habits” will compete at the Outlaw Monster Truck Challenge at the Clallam County Fairgrounds on Saturday.

A local competition with Tough Trucks and Cars is planned, as well as Quad Wars.

Gates open at 6 p.m. The show starts at 7 p.m.

Advance tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for children from 5 to 11 years old. Children 4 and younger are admitted free.

Advance tickets are available at the Sequim and Port Townsend Pizza Factory locations, Forks Outfitters, Port Angeles Chevron, Roadrunner 76 in Port Angeles and Port Angeles Tire Factory.

Tickets will be sold at the gate for a higher price.

Picnic concert

The Port Angeles Symphony will present a “Pops and Picnic Concert,” at Sequim Community Church, 950 N. Fifth Ave., at 7:30 p.m. today and at Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St., at 7:30 on Saturday.

The program will feature classics chosen by the audience.

Bring a picnic and enjoy popcorn provided by Swain’s, along with root beer floats.

Tickets are $18 and available at Port Book and News, 104 E. First St., BeeDazzled at the Buzz, 130 N. Sequim Ave., and at the door.

Compost workshop

PORT HADLOCK — A free composting workshop by the Jefferson County Department of Public Works and Olympic Community Action Programs will be held at OlyCAP Community Garden, 10632 Rhody Drive, from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

The instructor, Sebastian Aguilar, will teach composting techniques.

Horsemen ride

LAKE CRESCENT — The Peninsula chapter of the Backcountry Horsemen is hosting a trail ride from the Mount Mueller Horse Camp west of Lake Crescent on Saturday.

A 1 ½-hour loop is offered for the casual rider, while a 4 ½-hour loop over a ridge will be available for adventurous riders and conditioned horses.

Riders are to bring their own horses and meet at 10 a.m. at the camp, which is off U.S. Highway 101, 4 miles west of the Fairholm General Store on the west end of Lake Crescent.

A potluck dinner will start at about 3 p.m. after riders return. A silent auction and chicken bingo will be held during the dinner.

There is no fee for the ride, but those who want club members to pick up steak or chicken for them for the potluck will pay a fee of $5. Participants also can bring their own meat for the barbecue. Dishes to share also are welcome and can be brought to the camp before the rides begin.

Traffic safety

SEQUIM — Traffic safety and clowns will be the focus of the First Teacher Traffic Safety Event today.

Members of the Sequim Police Department, Sequim Fire Department and Happy Tymer Clowns will be at the Sequim Community School, 220 W. Alder St., at 10 a.m.

A limited number of free helmets will be given to the first children to arrive.

Free car seat inspections also are planned.

Storytime series

PORT ANGELES — The North Olympic Library System will kick off its fall storytime series today.

Free storytimes for toddlers and preschoolers will take place at the Port Angeles Public Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., every Friday through Nov. 18.

Toddler storytimes, for children 2 to 3, will be presented at 10:15 a.m., followed by preschool storytimes, for children 3 to 5, at 11:15 a.m.

Each session will feature books and activities.

Walk for the poor

SEQUIM ­– The second annual Friends of the Poor Walk will take place at Sequim High School, Third Avenue and Fir Streeet from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

All ages are invited.

The walk is a fundraiser for for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

Teen pool

PORT ANGELES — Teen Night at the Pool, with free pizza, soda and music will take place at William Shore Memorial Pool, 225 E. Fifth St., from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

Marine Swap Meet

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Yacht Club’s fourth annual Marine Swap Meet will be Saturday.

The swap meet will be from 8 a.m. to noon in the west side boat haven parking lot, in the 1200 block of Marine Drive.

Participants should bring their own tables and set up for $10 per space. Sellers will begin setting up at 7:30 a.m.

Club fundraiser

SEQUIM — The Sequim Prairie Garden Club’s annual Country Store Benefit is planned at Pioneer Park Clubhouse, 387 E. Washington St., from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Items will include plant baskets, indoor plants, raffle items, baked goods, jams and jellies, plant bulbs, bowl gardens, plant starts, adult plants, used yard and garden items, books, crafts and holiday items.

Oktoberfest

PORT ANGELES — St. Andrew’s Place will present “A Toast to Our Elders” Oktoberfest at the Masonic Temple, 622 S. Lincoln St., from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday.

It will include a German buffet, beer tasting and live and silent auctions.

The cost is $25 for advance tickets and $30 at the door.

Seed class

PORT HADLOCK — The Organic Seed Alliance will host “Seed 101” at Washington State University Jefferson County Extension, 201 W. Patison, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The workshop will cover basic seed concepts, including timing of planting, ideal population sizes, preventing cross-pollination, selecting for improved varieties, seed maturation and harvest and seed cleaning techniques.

Museum Day

PORT TOWNSEND — The Jefferson County Museum will participate in the fifth annual Museum Day, presented by Smithsonian magazine, on Saturday.

Those with an admission card will be admitted to the museum free of charge.

PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula Rifle and Pistol Club will present a “First Step” pistol and revolver familiarization class at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Howard Blair, a firearms instructor, will guide participants through firearm use and operation.
