PORT ANGELES — Clallam County Fire District No. 2 will conduct a live-fire training exercise at the 400 block of Garling Road beginning at 7:30 a.m. Saturday.
Training is slated to last until approximately 4 p.m., Fire District No. 2 deputy chief of operations Jake Patterson said in a news release.
During this time, smoke is likely to be visible to residents in the Garling and Mount Pleasant roads area, Patterson said in the release.
An influx of fire vehicle traffic is also expected and the public is requested to avoid the training area if possible.
The live-fire exercise will be executed in a structure donated to the fire district.
With a decreasing number of actual structure fires, the district seeks to maintain and hone its firefighters’ skills for fighting structural fires, Patterson said in a phone interview.
The state requires firefighters to undergo live-fire training once every three years, he said.
The burn building provides a platform in which basic concepts of fire behavior, phases and development can be observed.
Concepts include physical changes of a solid fuel caused by increased heating, build up of combustible gases at ceiling level, as well as rapid expansion and subsequent ignition of fire gases as they roll across ceilings, also known as flame-over or rollover.
Also covered will be the various types of nozzle patterns, their effect on thermal layering, and how visibility is changed by upsetting the thermal layer.
Patterson advised that minor smoke might be present in the area after training is completed.
A fire watch will be in place overnight.
