Fire destroys 50 golf carts at The Cedars at Dungeness

Area courses donate carts to help out

SEQUIM — A fire consumed an estimated 50 golf carts and other course equipment early Sunday morning at The Cedars at Dungeness golf course.

Eric Quitslund, an assistant chief with Clallam County Fire District No. 3, said district personnel responded to the golf course at 1965 Woodcock Road with two fire engines and three water tenders after the alarm at 6:38 a.m. Sunday.

There they found an approximate 24-foot-by-100-foot structure fully involved in flames.

“We don’t know the cause yet, but I suspect it was a similar situation to the previous fire,” he said.

Fire crews, including Quitslund, responded to an electrical fire Feb. 7 at the course that destroyed or damaged three carts in a different shed.

Bill Shea, director of golf/general manager at The Cedars, said Monday no one has been able to get inside the structure to assess the damage.

He estimated 50 golf carts — including 40 rentals, two beverage carts, the golf range cart, some personal carts, two personalized carts for the Seattle Seahawks and Sonny Sixkiller and a food cart — were lost, along with other items in storage.

“It’s a big bummer,” Shea said. “Luckily no one was hurt. That is a huge blessing.”

The most recent fire was in a building east of the main building and parking area near the outdoor dumpsters.

Quitslund said all the carts are lost and the fire crew treated the fire defensively because of possible danger from propane tanks.

The fire was contained in about 15 minutes, he said, and declared out by about 7:30 a.m.

Shea said September is a busy month at The Cedars, but local golf courses are helping with the course’s cart needs.

Sequim’s SkyRidge Golf Course and Peninsula Golf Club in Port Angeles are loaning a few carts each, he said, and Golf Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton is renting The Cedars about 30 carts to get them through the fall.

In February, Shea said Cedars’ 70-plus carts are stored in three sheds and that all were insured.
