PORT ANGELES — It wasn’t enough that Dave and Shyrel Schaumburg escaped from a fire Friday morning that destroyed their mobile home and most of what was in it.
Later they found out that somebody went through the possessions they salvaged from the charred wreckage and took them.
“I didn’t have any idea somebody would steal our stuff,” Dave Schaumburg said.
“It’s ridiculous.”
Ron Iyndellin, a friend and neighbor of the Schaumburgs shook his head.
“There’s no words for it . . . that are printable,” he said.
Fire spread to home
Firefighters were called to 116 N. Lilac Ave. at 4:47 a.m. for a mobile home that was on fire.
The Schaumburgs live next door and were awakened by somebody pounding on the side of their home.
The fire then spread to their place.
Dave Schaumburg tried to rescue as much as he could — he’s the bass player for the hometown band Chantilly Lace — but as the fire grew in intensity, his wife made him stop.
He was able to save one of his bass guitars, but lost two. He also lost an amplifier and a couple of speakers.
The couple could do nothing but watch their home burn.
A truck from Fire District No. 2 arrived 16 minutes later, according to PenCom dispatch records, but both mobile homes were lost.
The mobile home where the fire started was leveled and the residents left the scene before deputies showed up, Dave Schaumburg said.
The Red Cross put up the Schaumburgs in the Chinook Motel on East First Street.
Later a Port Angeles Police officer came to their door with a bag of their possessions.
Seems they had been found, abandoned in a parking lot.
One of the returned items was a charred jewelry box one of Shyrel Schaumburg’s kids had given her.
“It’s nothing, it’s fire damaged, but it’s special,” she said.
The Schaumburgs have four children and 10 grandchildren, none of whom was living with them.
Items not recovered included Dave Schaumburg’s tools.
