OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK — Another secret of Lake Crescent was revealed last weekend when volunteer divers located a car that plunged into the deep, blue waters more than 43 years ago.
Divers on Sunday afternoon located a black, two-door 1950 Dodge sedan that hit a slick spot on Jan. 24, 1960, on U.S. Highway 101 at milepost 223, near Ambulance Point.
The car slid off the road and into the icy waters, but all four passengers escaped nearly unharmed.
The car was rusted but intact when located by divers, resting in about 200 feet of water.
Beverly Sherman, 63, of Lakewood, who was riding in the car when it slid off the road, said seeing video footage of the car was spooky, but healing.
Sherman said she didn’t have time to be scared at the time of the crash, but seeing the video of the car made her realize how lucky all four were to have escaped.
